Step Three: Review the List of  Minimum Computer Requirements

Now that you have completed Step One and Step Two, you will need to know if your personal computer has the minimum hardware requirements for an online course.  Review the list of requirements below.  Your VCT online course may require additional hardware and software.  You may also need software such an Office Suite.  If you do not have access to a computer at home or work, TSTC Marshall has several open labs available for your use as a student.  After completing this review you may continue on to Step Four: Student Services.

Do you need help determining minimum hardware requirements?

When you turn on your computer, the operating system will display while the computer is starting up.   Most PC/Windows computers use the Microsoft Windows operating system and Macintosh computers use a Macintosh operating system. Record the title and version of your operating system.

  • Click on the My Computer icon on the desktop.
  • Click on Control Panel.
  • Click on System.
  • Under the heading "Computer," the kind of processor and the amount of RAM are listed.
  • Record this information on the Your Computer Form.
  • Select Apple System Profiler from under the Apple menu (top left corner of your screen).
  • Under "Memory overview," you will find the amount of RAM listed beside "Built-in memory."
  • Record this information on the Your Computer Form.
Hard Drive Capacity

  • Click on My Computer.
  • Position the mouse over C: and click the right button.
  • Click on Properties.
  • The hard drive capacity is listed here.
  • Record the hard drive capacity on the Computer Facts Form.
  • Click on the hard drive icon on your desktop.
  • Under the file menu select General Information from Get Info.
  • The hard drive capacity is listed here.
  • Record the hard drive capacity on the Your Computer Form.

Answer all of the following questions about your computer:
What kind of computer do you have? PC/Windows, Macintosh, UNIX/Linux

What operating system do you have? Windows 3.1, 9X, ME, 2K, NT, Mac OS 8.X or Higher, UNIX or Linux
How much Ram does your computer have? <64MB, 64MB-128MB, 128MB-256MB, <256MB
What is your hard drive capacity? <10GB, 10GB-20GB, >20GB
What speed is your modem? 14K, 28K, 56K or Higher
What web browser and which version are you using? Internet Explorer 3, 4, 5.x, 6, Netscape 3, 4.x, 6, Other
