Career Outlook

Roles & Responsibilities:

Professionals in this field perform safety and environmental compliance inspections, investigate accidents, apply Texas Workforce Compensation Commission (TWCC) regulations and keep records according to Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards. Graduates also develop programs for employee safety training, fire prevention and protection, hearing conservation and noise control, drug abuse prevention, and hazardous waste handling and disposal. As a graduate of the Safety Compliance program, you may hold positions such as safety technician, safety director, safety manager, industrial hygiene technician or air sampling technician. Employers want technicians who can:

  • Help them comply with OSHA and EPA standards, as well as other government regulations;
  • Develop, implement and administer safety and fire prevention programs;
  • Train employees in proper safety techniques;
  • Investigate and control accidents; and
  • Apply TWCC regulations.

The Technical Advantage:

TSTC students overwhelmingly state the top reason they picked the college was because of the hand-on experience. While at TSTC, Safety Compliance students use many types of equipment and software to gain the competitive edge. These include:

  • Noise monitoring equipment;
  • Air sampling equipment;
  • Fall protection devices;
  • Respirators; and self-contained breathing apparatuses.

Industry Standards:

In addition to holding a degree from TSTC, graduates can gain extra credibility in the job market by holding industry certifications such as Occupational Health & Safety Technologist (OHST), offered by the Council on Certification of Health, Environmental and Safety Technologists (CCHEST). Individuals can also secure First Aid certification from the American Red Cross. Individuals who complete the OSHA General and Construction Industry Courses will also receive 30 hour course completion cards from OSHA. These endorsements help professionals broaden their career opportunities.
